SC regulators approve plans for new area code

The Eastern Carolinas will be getting a new area code, but what the number will be is not clear. The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that on Wednesday that the Public Service Commission approved a plan for a second area code for both the the Lowcountry and Pee Dee.

The new area code will be added in addition to the current 843 area code that is currently being used and will  require people to start dialing the area code when they make calls.

The new code is expected to be implemented sometime in the beginning of 2015. There is currently no word on what the new number will be.

The region is getting the second area code due to population growth as well as the proliferation of cellphones  that are using up the current  843 number
