Water Missions International hosting Charleston Walk for Water this Saturday

In celebration of World Water DayWater Missions International will host the seventh annual Charleston Walk for Water at Cannon Park on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thousands of local residents will participate in the approximately 3 1/2 mile walk carrying buckets to represent the considerable ground women and children in developing countries must travel on a daily basis in order to procure water. Halfway through, walkers will fill their buckets with dirty water and at the conclusion, will dump the water into Water Mission International's state of the art solar-powered Living Water Treatment System.

After raising over $210,000 thanks to the Walk in 2012, WMI has even higher hopes for this year, setting a fundraising goal of $250,000. The funding will be put toward providing safe water and sanitation for thousands of people who have never had a way of getting it before.

WMI Special Events Coordinator Brittany Fogle expressed her excitement for this year's walk and the growing number of Lowcountry residents already committed to participating,

“We are encouraged by the number of community members registered for the Walk for Water this Saturday, and we hope that even more will be able to join us. The Walk for Water is an eye-opening experience to the reality facing almost 1 billion people every day – lack of safe water. This event invites people here in Charleston to be part of the solution.”

Those interested in registering to participate in the walk can do so by clicking here. WMI is also accepting general donations, which can be made by clicking here.

After the walk, Lowcountry community members are invited to attend a family-friendly afternoon in Cannon Park. The gathering will include food, vendors, games and a live performance Plane Jane.
