Police report released in arrest of St. James High School guidance counselor

A guidance counselor from St. James High School, who is on administrative leave, was charged with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl, according to an Horry County police report.

Gerald Baxter, 61, of Murrells Inlet was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, according to jail records. Baxter remains jailed pending a bond hearing.

Baxter was in his third year working at St. James High School, said Teal Harding, Horry County Schools spokeswoman. School officials are conducting an internal investigation into Baxter.
