More than half of Horry students receive free or reduced lunch

More than half of students in Horry County Schools receive free or reduced lunch, a statistic that is in line with the rest of South Carolina’s public schools, according to a national study released recently.

A 2013 study by the Southern Education Foundation found that 58 percent of South Carolina students were classified as low-income in 2013, and at least 51 percent of the state’s students received completely free lunch, according to the latest information available from the foundation.

Sixty-four percent of Horry students received free or reduced lunch in 2013, according to data from the district, but district officials said the number has dropped since.
