Coastal Dance Centre’s 2014 -2015 In-Studio Performance Series Presents “COPPELIA”

Myrtle Beach, SC - Coastal Dance Centre is delighted to announce the launching of its 2014 -2015 In-Studio Performance Series with its presentation of the storybook ballet, COPPELIA, on August 1st and 2nd, 2014 at the Coastal Dance Centre Studio @ The Market Common. Both performances are at 6:30 pm.

COPPELIA features the 2014 Coastal Dance Centre's Summer Ballet Intensive students led by Kiely Elizabeth Clark and Jade Parker who will alternate in the role of Swanhilda and Brock Fowler takes on the role of Franz. Most of the cast members are also members of Coastal Dance Centre’s performing company, the Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre (CYBT). Audiences will also be treated to CYBT Adult Ensemble’s Randy Lapham's comedic interpretation of Dr. Coppelius.

Coastal Dance Centre’s COPPELIA is an abridged version presented in three acts and is based on the original choreography of Arthur Saint Leon. The music is by Léo Delibes. COPPELIA is a standard classical ballet repertoire. Based on the story of E.T.A. Hoffmann, who also wrote The Nutcrackerin 1816, COPPELIA is a comical tale about a mysterious toy-maker, Dr. Coppelius, who lives in the town square. Dr. Coppelius shares his house with a beautiful life-size doll, Coppelia that he created to keep himself company in his workshop. Everyday Coppelia is seated with her book on the front balcony of the toy-maker's workshop. His neighbor, Swanhilda, and her fiance, Franz, believe Coppelia is real. Franz falls in love with the beautiful doll. The adventure begins as both he and Swanhilda sneak separately into the toy-maker's workshop. The old toymaker is tricked when the mischievous Swanhilda trades places with the doll and dances about his workshop. With great merriment and fun, the story ends with a festive wedding and happiness for all.

Guest Master Teacher for Coastal Dance Centre’s Summer Ballet Intensive, Miriam Mesa-Pelly, is staging and directing the ballet. Ms. Mesa-Pelly is originally from the National Ballet School of Cuba and is presently a faculty member of the SC Governor’s School for Art and Humanities.
