A month into school and changes are being made, not all parents are on board with these changes...One of those decisions was to drop Spanish class, to bring on a new class, Compass Odyssey; a digital based class Myrtle Beach Middle School leaders say, will boost literacy skills.

While Compass Odyssey is great -my son loves it- and it does improve literacy skills, it's odd they are dropping the second most popular language spoken in the United States. Besides the popularity of Spanish in this hemisphere, it is known that learning a second language helps with reading and verbal fluency and has also helped improve intelligence.

"The Spanish language is the second most used language in the United States, where it is also known as American Spanish (Spanish: Español americano). There are more Spanish speakers in the United States than there are speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined. According to the 2012 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language spoken at home by 38.3 million people aged five or older, a figure more than double that of 1990."

The Spanish language is expected to grow to at least, "41 million Hispanic Spanish speakers by 2020".
