Atlantic Stage Presents the Pulitzer Prize Winner DOUBT

What is doubt?  Is it simply uncertainty or weakness?  Can doubt be a virtue in a world that tells you that you have to take sides?  These are just some of the questions that are raised by Doubt, a Parable by John Patrick Shanley being presented by Atlantic Stage.

Atlantic Stage takes on the 1995 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama under the direction of Jen Plants.   “(Doubt) seems to be a quiet play, but it's an explosive one for the audience. It is full of twists and turns and asks the audience to change perceptions and question biases in every single scene.”   Set in 1964, the play takes place at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and School in the Bronx.   Sister Aloysius Beauvier, school principal raises concerns about a new student to Sister James.  Her line of questioning leads Sister James to take more notice of what is happening in and out of her classroom and raises concerns around Father Flynn and his relationship with the young boy.    Still, Sister James seems to want to find the facts before jumping to conclusions. “Doubt is a play about what to do when you’re not sure,” said Plants. “Does strength come from surety? Or is there power in questions that have no answers?”

Sandi Shackleford, Actor’s Equity and Atlantic Stage Company Member, once again creates an unforgettable character in Sister Aloysius.   She was last seen at Atlantic Stage last season in Driving Miss Daisy and AS credits include Rabbit Hole, Holiday Memories, and Lost in Yonkers.   Father Flynn is played by Steve Harley who was last seen in Atlantic Stage’s A Christmas Carol.   Hannah Lewis, a student at Coastal Carolina University, makes her Atlantic Stage debut as Sister James.  Also making her Atlantic Stage debut is Char Bel as Mrs. Muller, the student’s mother.

Doubt director, Jen Plants is currently the Carl Djerassi Playwriting Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She recently directed Richard II at the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival (UK.)  Previous AS credits include Rabbit Hole, which she directed, and Vera in Child’s Play.   Helping to pull together the show’s vision is a creative team that includes lighting design by Amy Edge,  costume design by Erin Dooley, set design by Thom Penn and sound design by guest artist, David N. DeMattia of Sleeping Dragons Studio.
