Charleston,
SC (February 25, 2010)
The Navy Yard at Noisette (Navy Yard) recently received
LEED Certification under the LEED for Neighborhood Development Pilot Program. LEED
for Neighborhood Development is a certification program developed by the US
Green Building Council (USGBC) in collaboration with the Congress for New
Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council that integrates the
principles of smart growth, new urbanism and green building into the first
national system for neighborhood design. The USGBC states that “LEED
certification provides independent, third-party verification that a
development's location and design meet accepted high levels of environmentally
responsible, sustainable development.”
Approximately
240 projects from around the world registered for the LEED ND Pilot program in
the middle of 2007. As of February
1, 2010, Sixty-three projects had obtained varying levels of
certification. The Navy Yard is
the first LEED ND certified project in the State of South Carolina. As a participant of the Pilot Program, The
Noisette Company provided feedback to the US Green Building Council to improve
the proposed rating system.
Jeff
Baxter, The Noisette Company’s Director of Development, managed the
certification process for the Navy Yard.
Baxter states “We are excited about receiving the first LEED ND
certification in the State. Our
team has been working towards the certification for over two years. The
certification offers an independent, third-party affirmation of the merits of
the Navy Yard project and continues to build on a list of important sustainable
projects occurring within North Charleston and the Noisette Community.”
