A new bill will be proposed to South Carolina next month that would ban texting while driving. There are three bills in the works, one by Sen. Kevin Bryant, another by Rep. Don Bowen and a third by Rep. James Smith.

Read more stories on this subject in our text messaging topic page.Bryant's calls for a $25 fine and does not allow officers to cite motorists for texting while driving unless they are stopping them for another violation. It also states that violation of the law cannot be used as evidence of negligence in a lawsuit.

Bowen's includes 60 days of jail time and a $2,500 fine for the first offense.

Smith will call for a $250 find and two-point violation for the first offense and a three-point violation for violations after that.

Of the three, Smith's seems to be the favorite, and is backed by a couple dozen Dreher High School classmates, who ignited this texting-while-driving frenzy.
