What's up with all this 'school closure' talk?

I'll be posting another story on this topic momentarily, but if you haven't been following the school "redesign" saga, it basically boils down to the Charleston County School District needing to save money because of state Legislature's direct and indirect cuts to the district's budget.

Read more stories on this subject in our consolidation topic page.Over the years money has been shifted away from more affluent school districts to the more rural districts that commonly have poorer performing students and less money per students to teach with.

It's a simple problem that creates a complex reaction, and that's why I was glad to see The Charleston City Paper's overview of the situation and what the school district is trying to do.

So go read it and wade through their home-for-sale metaphor.
