In a sure sign that tonight's debate (and I use the term loosely) should be interesting, S.C. Governor Mark Sanford held a press conference to stifle the speculative connection between him and 1960s-era radical Bill Ayers.

The connection was made by the Obama campaign in an e-mail titled "Will the McCain Camp be Challenged on their Lies?"

It was sent as a rebuttal to Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's insentience over Obama-Ayers ties. The Obama campaign pointed out that many have indirect ties to Ayers, including Sanford.

Here is that section from the October 6 e-mail:
LIE: Ayers has not been accepted by any community outside of Chicago.

FACT: Ayers is known in other communities like Columbia, SC. He is currently a distinguished scholar at the University of South Carolina where Republican Governor Mark Sanford, who supported Senator McCain’s campaign as far back as the 2000 primaries, serves as an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees. By Governor Palin’s standards, that means Governor Sanford shares Ayers’ views.
