State agencies fighting over proposed coal plant

Update February 11, 3:15 p.m.: Governor Mark Sanford has officially announced he's against the proposed coal plant and says we should pursue nuclear options. Go read about it.

The proposed coal plant near Florence already has a controversial legacy, particularly for something that hasn't even been built yet.

Read more stories on this subject in our coal topic page.But things just got a whole lot more interesting when the director of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources asked the state Department of Health and Environmental Control's board to overturn a permit for how much pollution the new plant would be able to emit.

In January a state senator wrote that South Carolina could get slammed in new penalties for its high energy consumption and reliance on coal. And back in October a NASA scientist implored the utility not to build another coal plant.
