Colleton County deputy killed; "persons of interest" in custody

(Note: Latest updates are at the bottom) Authorities are on the hunt for the killer after Colleton County Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Compton was found dead in Smoaks. He was shot around 3 a.m., officials said, after reporting to a call on Sunflower Drive:

Live 5 News is reporting on the scene, and The Post and Courier has updates, as well.

Update 1: NBC News 2 has video from the area, as well as coverage of a 9:30 a.m. news conference on the shooting.

Update 2: The Post and Courier has added more details about the shooting, and the massive manhunt of "75 to 100 law enforcement officers."

Police still haven't said they have any leads on the shooter.

Oh, and don't forget there was another Colleton County deputy shot back in February not too far up the road.

Update 3: ABC News 4 has video on the killing, and they report that there are two "persons of interest" in the case, though authorities aren't handing out names. They also offered this:

Update 4: NBC News 2 reports that a "person of interest" is in custody, but they aren't giving a name. Meanwhile, Live 5 News offers a community reaction piece from the town of Smoaks.

Update August 7: Live 5 News reports on the "persons of interest." Apparently there are three and some turned themselves in.

Update August 7, 6:45 p.m.: ABC News 4 offers a video detailing how police captured the third "person of interest", the station also has details on the officer's funeral and memorial service.
