Making bad things worse, Maersk announced that it's WestMed service will also be leaving Charleston's port and taking traffic to other nearby ports like Savannah and Norfolk.

Read more stories on this subject in our port topic page.In response as to why, a Maersk statement said:
When compared to the cost under our current agreement with the Port of Charleston, other regional ports have provided a more cost-effective option for this service and our deployment reflects this.

My preferred write-up on the topic is from The Charleston Regional Business Journal.

The end result? In addition to the other hits Charleston was to take from Maersk's departure, one fewer ship will be calling on Charleston.
