S.C. Bar offers Lawyer Referral Service

Do you need an attorney but don’t know where to look? The S.C. Bar Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) can help. LRS is a simple and inexpensive method of introducing people with legal problems to qualified attorneys.

While you may be unsure whether your situation requires a lawyer—handling a legal issue, getting a divorce, considering adoption, starting a business or writing a will—in many cases it is useful and can be less expensive in the long run to obtain the advice of counsel early on.

LRS operators provide referrals by the county and type of law needed. All lawyers referred are in good standing with the S.C. Bar and maintain malpractice insurance. Lawyers agree to offer an initial 30-minute consultation for no more than $50; the lawyer and client then agree on a fee moving forward. It is the responsibility of the person requesting a referral to contact the lawyer.

"The Lawyer Referral Service can be a helpful tool in getting an handle on your legal issues," said Cindy Coker, director of the S.C. Bar Public Services Division. "Many people think an Internet search will solve their problems, but there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Obtaining a lawyer ensures your issues are handled correctly, efficiently and as required by law."

To reach the Lawyer Referral Service via phone, call (803) 799-7100 (Richland and Lexington counties) or 1-800-868-2284 (statewide) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To submit your information for a referral online, visit www.scbar.org/lrs.
