ROLLING OF THE BULLS COMES TO FOLLY BEACH

Run down the Edge of America, Pamplona style, dodging derby girls at every turn.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – You’ve heard of Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This year the Lowcountry High Rollers roller derby team brings its own take on the annual event, putting on horns and skating through runners for Rolling of the Bulls. It’s all for a good cause. And hey, no animal cruelty in our version.

Head out to the Edge of America on Sept. 18 from high noon until 5 p.m. Let your favorite derby bull chase you, but watch out for their Wiffle ball bull bats! The route starts at 3rd Street West and Ashley Avenue and ends at Blu Restaurant inside the Holiday Inn at 0 Center St.

After-run festivities include sand derby (you have to see it to understand it), corn hole, a blow-up water slide and more. We’ll have vendors selling refreshments, street performers and live music with Jason and the Juggernauts, Head Rush and others. Raffle prizes include a 12-week program at East West Health Arts and spa gift certificates.

Runners should come dressed in white and are asked to make a $5 donation. They will receive a keepsake Rolling of the Bulls bandana and a special cup that earns discounts at Blu. Register online at www.active.com/running/folly-beach-sc/the-rolling-of-the-bulls-2010 or at Loggerhead’s at 123 W. Ashley Ave. at 10 a.m. on race day.

All proceeds from participating runners and our event sponsors benefit the Folly Beach Relief Fund and Surfers' Healing. The Relief Fund helps residents and businesses in the event of an environmental disaster or other hardship. Surfers' Healing, a national group with a local chapter, connects professional surfers with children with autism.
