North Charleston to Host 6th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition

The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to present its 6th annual African American fiber art exhibition, Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folkflore. The exhibition will be on display at North Charleston City Hall daily from May 1 through June 10, and is presented as component of the 2012 North Charleston Arts Festival, taking place May 4-12. Admission and parking are free.

Creation, or Virgin Mother, stories such as Yemaya, are universal. Inspired by the folklore and visual history of African water divinities and explorations of this subject by scholars, the 6th installment of this annual exhibition will feature African American fiber artists from across the nation interpreting stories and depictions of water spirits in African and the Afro-Atlantic world through cloth. Juried pieces will include art quilts and cloth dolls created through traditional and non-traditional fiber techniques. "Fiber art muralism is an emerging art form,” explains exhibition curator, Torreah “Cookie” Washington. “We are very excited to bring this fine craft to the Lowcountry with Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folklore.”

Washington will a host a reception for the exhibit on Thursday, May 10, from 6:00-8:00pm. She, along with folklorist, Susan Scott Hester, MA, will also lead a lunchtime lecture and tour of the exhibition on Monday, May 7, from 12:00-2:00pm. Both events will take place in the Montague Conference Room on the 2nd floor of North Charleston City Hall and are free and open to the public.

North Charleston City Hall is located at 2500 City Hall Lane, North Charleston, SC 29406. Exhibition viewing times are 8:00am-8:00pm, daily. Inquiries regarding the participating artists or purchase information may be directed to the North Charleston Cultural ArtsDepartment at (843) 740-5854.
