The Navy Yard at Noisette - What Have You Done For Me Lately?

The Navy Yard at Noisette is a 340-acre, sustainable urban redevelopment that includes parts of the former Charleston Naval Base.

In the past year (2010), the Navy Yard at Noisette (NYN) has been alive with activity and continues to assertively push forward despite economic challenges.

  • NYN received LEED Neighborhood Development certification.  LEED for Neighborhood Development is a certification program developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in collaboration with the Congress for New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council that integrates the principles of smart growth, new urbanism and green building into the first national system for neighborhood design.  The Navy Yard is the first LEED ND certified project in South Carolina.
  • The Charleston Naval Hospital Historic District was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  The area consisting of the former Naval Hospital and supporting buildings is the third district at the Navy Yard at Noisette to receive this designation.  Previously, the Officer’s Housing Historic District and the Naval Shipyard Historic District were added to the register.
  • West Yard Lofts began and finished construction on a new residential project located off of Noisette Blvd.  The property was purchased and developed by Landmark Development out of Winston-Salem NC.  Approximately sixty apartments are included in the 4-story building with a mix of one, two and three bedroom units.  The first new residential development in decades at the Navy Yard is a modern, urban complex complimenting the existing architecture, culture and commercial uses of the area.
  • After purchasing historic Building NH-55, Coleman Snow Engineers, Inc. finished renovations to the historic 17,000 square foot building.  The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification. The building serves as the company’s new headquarters.
  • The sale of Building 780 to the Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR) was the first closing of 2010.  Serving the Tri-county area, LOR provides goods and services to children that have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.
  • Panama N was purchased, rehabilitated and opened as an office headquarters for Live Oak Consultants.
  • Historic Quarters 759 was purchased by a private party in August and plans to restore the former officers quarters housing are under way.
  • After Purchasing Quarters K, bordering Riverfront Park, The Runaway Bay Restaurant renovated the historic building overlooking the Cooper River and provides North Charleston with its only waterfront dining experience.
  • Another restaurant, Anna Bell’s also opened business at 10 Storehouse Row.
  • South Carolina Electric & Gas is nearing completion of a new substation that will provide modern electric service to the Navy Yard.
  • Parham and Company purchased Quarters 760 located in the West Yard District of the Navy Yard.  Renovations are underway to revitalize this historic structure into a furniture and art showroom.
  • SC STRONG has begun renovation on Quarters C in the Historic Officers’ Housing District.
  • Palmetto Scholars Academy, South Carolina’s first Gifted and Talented Charter School opened in August.  The school is attended by close to 200 students.
  • Riverfront Park celebrated its 5-year anniversary and held multiple events drawing thousands of attendees.
  • Currently the NYN is 98% Leased. Many new companies have joined the community including Anna Bell’s, Ikhana, IllFx, Starsity Graphics, and Social Monkey Group.
  • The Lowcountry Innovation Center continues to grow as well, adding Cedrus Development, Atlas Executive Consulting, Averalink Information Systems and SGA Architecture among others.
  • NYN is proud to be a part of the larger 3,000 acre Noisette Community and City of North Charleston which in 2010 was recognized by the Home Depot Foundation as Winner of the Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development.  The city was also chosen to receive the Award for Municipal Excellence for Sustainable Urban Revitalization from the National League of Cities.
  • NYN was home to various events including; Kulture Klash VI, Merge, the City of North Charleston’s Culture Arts Festival Quilt & Fiber Exhibition, Riverfront Race Festival, Brewvival, and the Gay Pride Parade.  Many organizations held seminars, association meetings, and arts festivals throughout the year. Multiple conferences were held at and/or toured the Navy Yard in 2010 including the Balle Conference, Navigating Our Future, International Making Our Cities Livable Conference, Clemson Architecture, Savannah College of Art and Design and the Sustain SC Conference.
