Charleston Audubon & Natural History Society
We have been invited to bird on Kiawah Island, a private residential community located south of Charleston. There are numerous areas on the island that have been left in their natural state including ponds, tidal creeks, salt marsh and miles of ocean beach, which are home to wading birds, waterfowl and shore birds. Our outing will be led by Sarah Ernst, one of the resident naturalists on the island, who has informed me that Great Horned Owls, eagles, Black-necked Stilts, Red Knots, loons and grebes as well as many summer breeding birds are possible.
A moderate amount of walking may be involved on this outing. We will probably eat on the go and rest rooms are available at the nature center.
We will car pool from our meeting place, the shopping center at the intersection of Folly Rd. (SC 171) and Maybank Hwy. (SC 700). Please plan to arrive by 7:00 AM and bring a lunch, your birding gear, a scope if you have one, and insect repellent.
