Events abound for kids this Saturday to 'Get Up, Get Out and Go Play'

Nickelodeon’s 8th Annual Worldwide Day of Play is coming to Charleston on Saturday, September 24, in the form of Charleston Day of Play.

The event aims to encourage kids to "Get Up, Get Out and Go Play!" a the Charleston community is preparing activities for children and their families to make that happen.

The following events will take place on Saturday:

Community walk across the Ravenel Bridge: Join The MUSC Lean Team to walk across the Ravenel Bridge. Participants gather at 8 am, Saturday mornings, at the gravel parking lot just past the Cigar Factory on East Bay and Cooper in Charleston. The nearest GPS address is 12 Cooper St. Charleston, SC 29403.  Each week, the miles walked by all of the participants are recorded.  Join the fun, help the collective miles grow, and experience health one step at a time!  This event is free.

Children’s Fishing Festival at Colonial Lake: Come test your fishing skills and luck at Colonial Lake with the Huck Finn Fishing Festival! This festival is open to kids between the ages of 4 and 12 and costs $3.00/fisherkid! Awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group (4-6, 7-9, 10-12). Other prizes will be awarded during a raffle at the end of the event. Registration begins at 8:30am and the fishing is between 9-11 am. Awards and raffle take place from 11am -12pm. Concessions will be available for purchase.  There will be a limited number of free Nickelodeon jump ropes while supplies last.

Visit the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry:
- 11:30 a.m. - Parachute Play - Come outside in the green space to experience cooperation and team spirit at CML during the outdoor parachute games.  All the parachute games develop creativity, coordination, verbal communication skills, and problem solving.  Participants will play games such as Cat & Mouse, Mushroom, Shark and more.
- 1:30 p.m. - Visit the Art Room where children will paint with apples, make applesauce, create textured seed art and more.
- 3:30 - Hopscotch Fun - Join us in the outdoor play area to experience variations of one of the world's most popular games.  Come hop, skip, and jump for some good ole fashion exercise and entertainment. There is a fee for admittance.

There will be a limited number of free Nickelodeon jump ropes while supplies last.

Take a dance class at the Cannon Street YMCA: Learn how to Zumba, join a Zumba Class at the Cannon Street YMCA 11am - 12pm.  Call the YMCA of Greater Charleston at 843-577-9622 for more information.  The program is free on Saturday. There will be a limited number of free Nickelodeon jump ropes while supplies last.

Visit the Charleston’s Farmers Market: Find a special treasure to taste in the fresh fruits and vegetables.  The Farmers Market is open at 7 am to 2 pm in Marion Square.

Or…put on your tennis shoes and take a walk, run or ride your bike on the West Ashley Greenway or West Ashley Bikeway. Hop on the Ashley River Walk and enjoy the beautiful waterfront that surrounds the city. Take a downtown walking tour! Visit the museums and learn what makes Charleston special. Explore one of the beautiful parks throughout the city, especially Ft. Sumter, Charlestowne Landing, James Island County Park, White Point Garden, Waterfront Park, the Angel Oak (Johns Island), Demetrius Park (James Island), or any of the many city parks scattered throughout our beautiful community.

Don’t forget to borrow a racket and head to the tennis courts, or slip on a bathing suit and make a splash at our city pools. Come out and support our Charleston Miracle league. And if you need more to do, just grab a Frisbee or ball, find a family member or friend, and find an open place and make this day a special day to have some fun outside.
