New bill aims to verify immigration status of unemployed workers

Lawmakers will debate today whether a bill requiring South Carolina's unemployment agency to verify if laid off workers are in the country legally is necessary.

The state already requires business owners to check the status of its workers. Under the new bill, the state's unemployment agency would also screen applicants to make sure that no illegal aliens may draw an unemployment check.

The State has a brief on the proposed bill; read it here.
