City hires director of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. announced that Tim Keane has been hired as the Director of Planning, Preservation, & Sustainability for the City of Charleston.

The position appears to lead the Director of Sustainability position created in October

Tim Keane was previously the Director of Planning and Neighborhoods for the City of Charleston from January 1999 until January 2005. Tim led Charleston’s creation of the Century Five Comprehensive Plan for the city and new zoning districts and led detailed design for specific planning projects including the West Ashley Circle and Concord Park.

Time Keane left the City of Charleston Department of Planning and Neighborhoods to start his own company, Keane and Co., a planning and urban design consulting practice located in Charleston. Keane and Co. designs new neighborhoods in the Southeast and Midwest, related to revitalization and development with established city and small town centers as well as conservation of rural areas and protection of natural resources.

Mayor Riley said, “I am eager for Tim Keane to begin his work as the Director of the Planning, Preservation, & Sustainability. Since Tim left the Department in 2005, it has grown tremendously and taken on new and important challenges. Tim will be able to keep up the momentum and keep progress a priority for the city as he did before.”

Tim Keane begins work today.
