Lunch Break: Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries

TheDigitelMYR

Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries, the newest burger joint in Myrtle Beach opened about a week and a half ago. This is their first South Carolina location and there are an expected 50 locations around the state in the coming years.

Located at the Tanger Outlets on Highway 501, Hwy 55 (formally Andy's) is a sit-down, 1950's style diner. My lunch companion and I were greeted at the door by Brittney, a young woman who was smiling and informed us we could sit anywhere we would like. The restaurant had only been opened for the day for thirty-or-so minutes and there was only one other table. Employees sat at the counter taking a break before the lunch rush -each one of them did acknowledge us with a smile and nod as we walked by.

Hwy 55's menu offers typical items that can be found at similar restaurants. burgers, fries, cheese steaks, hot dogs and assorted specialty sandwiches - one of which is named after popular Carolina's radio personalities, the John Boy & Billy Western BBQ Bacon Burger. The burger, as well as a chicken sandwich, uses John Boy & Billy's Grillin’ Sauce.

The Food

273 I'm a burger guy. I love them so that is the main reason I just had to try Hwy 55.  Also it is the last day of Burger Month! I decided on the The Andy's Double cheeseburger with bacon and my lunch companion ordered the Philly Cheese steak.

The Andy's Double was delicious. All the toppings tasted super fresh. The meat was cooked just right, a nice seared crust with juicy burger in the middle. My lunch date and I took bites of each other's orders, she agreed that the burger was really good, but as she notes (and I agree with), Little River's 2 Dogs a Walkin's burgers were just a tad better. The most obvious comparison the burgers might get is to Five Guys burgers, and that's a fair comparison, but Hwy 55's burger patties are a lot bigger, thicker and juicier (and I love Five Guys).

Their Philly Cheese steak is, of course, thinly sliced steak and is served with sauteed mushrooms, onions and peppers with melted American cheese on a steamed hoagie roll. There is an option to substitute provolone for the American cheese (at no extra charge) and that is what she did. The cheese steak was good with equally fresh toppings; however, it wasn't the "best I ever had."

We also tried a sample of their famous frozen custard and it was delicious. Creamy, sweet, and smooth, I wished I hadn't ordered such a big burger so I could have gotten a cone of this deliciousness. Next time.

Should I go?

Short answer? YES! If you love a good burger, Hwy 55 is one of the best in the area. However, the location is less than desirable. Highway 501 is no fun nine months out of the year and for the next three months it'll be a nightmare, especially in and around the Tanger shopping center. With that said, GO! I suggest get there early and beat the lunch traffic and the shoppers.

But wait there's more...

For you 'challenge' eaters out there, Hwy 55 has something right up your alley. They offer the Big "A" Challenge

via Hwy55Burgers.com

We’ll stack up almost 50 oz. of meat on a burger bun, with at least four toppings, give you a side of fries and a 24 oz. soft drink. If you can eat it all in 30 minutes or less, then it’s on the house. If you can’t or if you cheat, we’ll happily charge you for it.

If you can't beat the burger in 30 minutes the Big "A" will set you back $24.99.
