So, everyone knows pretty much that parking at MUSC can be troublesome. And one of the ways to resolve that, obviously, is to create more parking spaces. Well, this fall, that will come in the form of a new parking garage that would add 1,500 spots to the school's parking situation.

And guess what? It's already full. MUSC doled out parking spots in the new garage, which is for employees, by date of hire, and they're out of spaces. Even though it hasn't opened yet, and won't for at least a couple of months. So now, officials are expecting something of a parking crunch as students come in for fall classes and so on.

On a typical day, some 11,000 faculty and staff, 2,500 students and thousands of patients converge on the hospital complex, though not all of them drive. When the new garage opens, the hospital will have a total of about 9,500 spaces.
Melinda Anderson, the hospital's parking administrator, said she's come up about 200 spaces short most weekdays this summer. She expects that deficit to double to about 400 spaces until the garage comes online. Manhattan Construction Company is the lead firm on the $40 million garage project, which began in March 2007. The construction contract calls for completion by Oct. 24.
The story goes on to talk about school officials' efforts to get the construction finished faster and how they expect the garage delays to affect parking, as well as the abundance of parking cheaters around MUSC (which is always fun ...).
Still, once the garage does open, officials hope it will have wide-ranging effects on parking across campus. Though, just in case they need an extra bump, MUSC is also promoting a carpooling program.
