The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk will be the world's longest if Mayor John Rhodes' efforts are successful.

Pre-hurricane Sandy, Atlantic City in New Jersey held the record with a boardwalk that was 4.5 miles long.  For a mere $20 million, Myrtle Beach could take over the top spot with a major extension to our current 1.2 mile downtown structure.

Where will the money come from?  Good question. That isn't clear yet, but the the movement seems to be towards sponsorships.  Businesses and organizations would fund the construction of a stretch of boardwalk, and, presumably, have the right to display their logo somewhere along the away in their section.

The tentative plan is for the the boardwalk to extend one mile north and two miles south to the Springmaid Pier.  You can read more in this Sun News article.
