May's unemployment rate highest ever

South Carolina's unemployment rate in the month of May came in at 12.1 percent, the highest jobless rate on record.

Read more stories on this subject in our unemployment topic page. That rate is up 0.7% points from April. In all 16,000 more South Carolinians found themselves unemployed, still the state's labor force grew by 7,542.

In all the Charleston area faired fairly well with "only" a 9.4% unemployment rate.
