No need to stop for school buses on multi-lane highway

When I first got my drivers license in South Carolina the rule was to stop for school buses that said stop, unless you were on the opposite side of a highway divided by a grass median.

And it seems for many others, that rule is still in effect. At least if you read this brief rant in the City Paper's Love : Hate section.

Yes, the law of my day is gone, having been revised by one that says you needn't stop for a school bus if you're traveling on the opposite side of the road, and said road has at least four lanes.

Not willing to risk a pricey ticket on my wisdom?

Smart reader. Here's what South Carolina law says: "The driver of a vehicle need not stop upon meeting a stopped school bus when traveling in the opposite direction on a multi-lane highway or multi-lane private road. ... For the purposes of this section a multi-lane highway or multi-lane private road is a highway or private road that consists of four or more traffic lanes, having at least two traffic lanes traveling in each direction."
