Asking whether a toll road makes sense for Johns Island

Referring to the toll road proposed for Johns Island, The Post and Courier takes a look at other toll roads in the state and asks the question, "Does a toll road make sense in South Carolina?"

Only two toll roads have been built in South Carolina, one on Hilton Head Island and one on the outer edge of Greenville. While Hilton Head's has exceeded traffic goals, Greenville's has faltered.

Supporters point out that the Johns Island project would be more comparable to the situation in Hilton Head, where the toll road lets drivers avoid clogged secondary streets and highways; the Greenville project offers only a choice between interstate or interstate.
