Myrtle Beach resort cracks Forbes' filthiest list

One Myrtle Beach resort has made a national top 10 list for all the wrong reasons.

The Polynesian Beach & Golf Resort was ranked the fifth dirtiest in Forbes' "America's Dirtiest Hotels" photo report. Sandwiched between hotels in New York City and Miami, the Myrtle Beach lodging was representative of the worst that the grand strand has to offer.

The Forbes list, which was published July 26, 2011, was calculated from 2010 surveys on the popular travel site TripAdvisor.

As one patron noted,

“My aunt was stuck in their elevator that smelled like pee and fish!!! The carpet was wet and moldy. Our room was disgusting with mold and mildew on the walls. Never, never again!!!!”

The TripAdvisor site currently ranks the Polynesian as number 208 out of 236 Myrtle Beach hotels. Indeed, one is left to wonder about the other 28.

The news comes on the heels of an in-depth Carolina Forest Chronicle feature revealing the disturbing news that the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control hasn't conducted routine inspections for Horry county hotel rooms in at least 16 years

If you've got the stomach for it, check out the rest of the disgusting photos from the Polynesian (as well as the other unfortunate picks) on the Forbes website.

Hopefully the Polynesian's cleaning crew (and PR pros) are hard at work this week.
