Stimulus funds fall short for Charleston's drainage plan

The City of Charleston’s hope to receive enough money through a federal stimulus fund to pay for a massive overhaul to downtown drainage system came up short this morning.

Instead of the $146.3 million requested from the U.S. Department of Transportation grant funding, the city will receive $10 million for improvements to the Crosstown Expressway related to the flood control effort.

The $10 million grant will help, but much more funding is needed to ease the peninsula's flooding problems.
