School board allows substitutes, but ups class sizes to cut teachers

Despite the Charleston County School Board's intent to cut substitute teacher use to save $500,000 a year, the board unanimously voted down the plan on Monday.

Read more stories on this subject in our school topic page.However, the school board also unanimously voted in a plan to up many class sizes by one or two students. The move will allow the district to cut some 70 teachers and save some $3.9 million.

The upping of class sizes will help the district face its $28 million shortfall next year. The district also faces a $13.3 million mid-year shortfall that the cut of subs was to help, the district will shift $500,000 in funds instead. That money comes from reserves and undesignated money.
