Daniel Island Rep. pushes to dissolve S.C.'s Commission on Higher Education

Daniel Island Republican Rep. Jim Merrill has filed a bill in hopes of abolishing South Carolina's Commission on Higher Education.

Merrill feels that the commission is no longer doing its job of watching over South Carolina's colleges and universities to make sure the programs and services offered are unique and vibrant. According to Merrill, dissolving the commission would also save the state about $2.1 million annually. Merrill hopes that the task that the commission currently undertakes would be transferred to each individual institution as well as the state Treasurer.

The commission was created to coordinate higher education services and ensure that colleges and universities provide affordable and accessible education.

The bill is currently being met with hesitation, but we'll be sure to keep on top of this one and see how it all plays out.
