Town of James Island dissolved; Petition goal for new town reached

Update September 4: With two weeks left, incorporation advocates reached their goal of 1,500 signatures to form a new town.

However the group has only raised about $6,000 of its $20,000 funding goal.

First reporting August 19: Yes, the Town of James Island was once again declared an improper incorporation and the town's assets have been dispersed.

But the spirit of the town isn't done yet (even if the City of Charleston is trying to gobble up more James Island land), and 35 islanders are out going door-to-door to collect signatures for a fourth incorporation.

In all, 1,500 signatures are needed and as of August 16 they had 337 with one more month to go.

And the group Free James Island is planning a meeting on Thursday, August 25, at 7 p.m. at the James Island 1 Fire Station in the training room. (1622 Camp Road, the training room is the building in the back.)

They will have the detailed map of the planned incorporation attempt and be addressing questions along with having petitions available.
