Dry weather, wind conditions: Don't burn anything today in South Carolina (update: dozens of fires)

Update February 21, late evening: The dry and windy weather condition helped grow nearly 100 brush fires across the state and more than two dozen in coastal areas.

That includes one in Orangeburg County that spread to Berkeley County burning some 40 acres.

NBC News 2 has a short report on the blazes; read it here.

ABC News 4 has a short report and raw video on out Mount Pleasant brush fire; get that here.

First reporting: The South Carolina Forestry Commission is asking that folks refrain from outdoor burnings as the dry weather and windy conditions are making things perfect for those blazes to spread.

And that's just what happened on Wadmalaw Island over the weekend when a leaf fire got out of control and burned several acres — here's a video report on that at NBC News 2.

The National Weather Service is saying that wind gusts could hit as high as 35-to-45 MPH today and there's not a drop of rain forecast for the next several days. Today's high is set to hit 79 degrees.

If you do burn leaves, you need to notify the Forestry Commission and stay with the fire until it is exhausted — here are the numbers for South Carolina counties.
