The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan partnered to rescue a stranded kayaker near the Cooper River, Saturday.

Rescued was Roger Clifton, 35.

Search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified by 911 dispatch at 1:12 p.m., Saturday, that Clifton had beached his kayak on an inaccessible island near Clouter Creek on the Cooper River.

Coast Guard Station Charleston deployed a 25-foot rescue boat crew and Air Facility Charleston launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew to the scene.

Coast Guard rescue crews arrived on scene at approximately 1:35 p.m., and were assisted by a good Samaritan with a flat bottom boat. Clifton was transfered to the Coast Guard and brought ashore.

No injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters of the importance of wearing a life jacket when navigating aboard recreational vessels and personal watercraft. In addition, VHF-FM marine band radios are encouraged for all marine activities in isolated areas where cell phone coverage can be poor.
