South Carolina's has made a lot of national news this year, and as a cherry on the cake, Fred Shapiro of The Yale Book of Quotations has chosen three statements to grace 2009's top ten list.

Shapiro picked quotes that are famous, important or revealing of the spirit of the times.

The three South Carolinian quotes that made the cut are:

- "Keep your government hands off my Medicare." Speaker at health care reform town hall meeting in Simpsonville, S.C., commenting on the government-created Medicare program, quoted by The Washington Post on July 28.

- "You lie!" Rep. Joe Wilson from South Carolina's shouted retort to Obama's address before a joint session of Congress on Sept. 9.

and

- "The governor is hiking the Appalachian Trail." Spokesman for South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford regarding Sanford's disappearance on June 22.

The Post and Courier has coverage on the announcement, but The State has more done a more detailed job.
