Charleston County deputy witnesses early morning suicide (update: name released)

Update February 9: Police have released the name of the man who fatally shot himself, but little more appears to be known.

First reporting: A Charleston County sheriff's deputy witnessed a man shoot and kill himself this morning on Edisto Island.

The deputy responded to a call about a car wreck a little after 4 a.m. this morning. When he arrived on the scene, the deputy found the driver of the wrecked vehicle standing in the back of his truck with an empty gun holster at his feet.

When the deputy asked to see the man's hands, the man whipped out the gun and shot himself in the chest. The man died at the scene.
