After eight decades of service, the Five Mile Viaduct (map) may soon be replaced as engineers become increasingly concerned over its alarming structural deficiencies.
The Post and Courier has the story about what's up.
The bridge was built in 1928 and it will be interesting to see if the conversation bends towards somehow repairing the bridge or creating a replica.
If you're intrigued about the bridge's past, check out this PDF over at the Library of Congress and here are photographs.
Back in 2007 the bridge was rated one of the worst in the Lowcountry (but surprisingly not the worst.)
