A woman accused of striking a toddler across the face at the day care center where she worked turned herself in to authorities Monday, six months after the alleged incident took place. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for Jaquette Farr Johnson, 49, and charged her with hitting a 3-year-old repeatedly at Kreative Academy in West Ashley last November.

"She struck a 3-year-old female at the day care center a number of times and bruised both eyes of the child," said Sheriff Al Cannon. It happened at the Kreative Academy on Savannah Highway in West Ashley.

According to the affidavit the suspect called the child's mother and told her that her daughter had fallen off the slide and hit her face on the wood chips. It was only later that the mother received a second phone call from a different employee telling her a different story.

An incident report says the employee that came forward was later fired. A claim the director of the academy, who is also the suspect's sister, denies.

The child's mother, Courtney Francis, filed the complaint with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. Johnson is charged with one count of unlawful conduct towards a child.

There's no explanation on why it took six months for a warrant to be issued. Live 5 reported that Sheriff Al Cannon said he couldn't account for the lapse.
