SLED cuts jobs, buys new SUVs and combat rifles

Attention has once again fallen on The State Law Enforcement Division after digging by The Post and Courier turned up the purchase of expensive vehicles and combat rifles at the same time the agency was tightening its belt and cutting jobs.

The expenses seem justifiable -- under ordinary budgetary situations.

For the record, this is SLED's mission directive:

The primary mission of the State Law Enforcement Division is to provide quality manpower and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies and to conduct investigations on behalf of the state as directed by the Governor and Attorney General.
