State Ports Authority launches 'Pledge for Growth'

The State Ports Authority has initiated a new program called Pledge for Growth that urges businesses and community leaders to offer input on ways to increase growth while maintaining environmental standards.

From The Post and Courier:

The agency's "Pledge for Growth" initiative includes a Web site — www.PledgeforGrowth.com — that offers suggestions and allows users to commit to one or more efforts related to land, air, water and people.

The SPA said a pledge "can be something simple, such as expanding a recycling program, or a larger effort, such as ... replacing equipment and vehicles with newer, more environmentally sensitive models."

From www.PledgeforGrowth.com:

There's more to the Port of Charleston than just cargo, ships, trucks and trains. In fact, the Port has taken on one of the state's largest environmental efforts to date — and was one of the first in the nation to consider "people" impacts. Among its efforts, the Port is restoring and adding 22 acres of tidal marshes, reducing port-related air emissions and funding an air monitoring station, partnering with Wildlife Trust to protect the Northern Right Whale and much more.
