Marijuana: South Carolina's real cash crop

Brian Hicks of The Post and Courier has penned a piece on South Carolina's real cash crop: mary jane.

Naturally, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture lists chickens, soy beans, corn and tobacco as the top money makers in the state, but like Hicks says, " dope dealers apparently are not real good at filing tax returns."

In reality, while tobacco brought in $68 million in 2009, the estimated total of marijuana sales in the sale was a crushing $142 million. And that was weed at pre-2010 prices. The cost for an ounce of pot continues to rise, according to PriceOfWeed.com, in South Carolina it is up to $440 an ounce.
