May is National Bike Month

National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons to ride. Whether you bike to work or school; to save money or time; to preserve your health or the environment; to explore your community or get to your destination, Bike Month in Myrtle Beach is setup to help get more people in our community out riding.

There are a few events planned throughout the month to encourage you to get out there and ride. The National Ride To Work week is set for May 14-18. If that seems a bit much for you then you can participate in the National Ride To Work Day which takes place on May 18. May 9th marks the Bike To School Day.

Local area bike clubs, shops and teams are also getting in on the action. The Waccamaw Trail Blazers are participating in the Get Up and Ride Bike Challenge. Each member registers and logs their mileage for the whole entire month. Not only is total mileage calculated, but also how much CO2 emissions saved. They plan on using this data to show to both city and county officials the benefits for promoting and riding bicycles in our area.

Local area bike shops such as Beach Bike Shop, Grand Strand Bicycles and Cyclopedia are also getting in on the promotion of National Bike Month. Each shop will be doing shop rides, safety tips and demos along with a slew of other promotions.

As the Grand Strand area bicycle enthusiast grow so does the need to provide proper traveling routes. Through the efforts of the National Bike Month, riders are hopeful that local officials will see the ever growing presence of bicyclist and the need to provide proper biking routes, driver education and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
