Jazz in Charleston: Tucked away but thriving

Image by ContributedImage by 20081007jazz.jpg Brian Widlowski (drums) and saxophonists Louis Dixson (from left), Chris (alto), Keith Namm and Drew O'Connor (trumpet) at Tuesday night jazz and funk jam at the now-closed Porgy's Other Place, Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston, circa early 2008. Other musicians not visible include Jesse Anderson (bass) and Kevin West (guitar).

If a tourist stopped you and asked where you can find Charleston's jazz scene, you'd probably have a hard time offering many suggestions. But The Post and Courier has done a good job of tracking down local jazz spots on Upper King, Market Street, East Bay, West Ashley and North Charleston.

Hop over to their site to read it, the story paints a good picture of what's where, but the grey sidebar on the left is a good reference of what plays where and when.
