Located in the heart of downtown Charleston, Burwell’s Stone Fire Grill opened it's doors to the public on Friday evening.
Located at 14 Market Street, Burwell’s concept expands on the traditional steakhouse model, offering an approachable variety of new and unique protein cuts and portions to satiate all appetites within the “see and be seen” environment.
“It has been our goal for some time to bring a modern and unique steakhouse to Charleston, and we are thrilled to make that dream a reality on our opening night,” says co-owner John Thomas. “We commissioned an extensive renovation on our building to create a remarkable, one-of-a-kind space and we’ve assembled a talented team of local chefs who will serve a groundbreaking menu of cuisine that offers locals and visitors the chance to try something very different.”
“Guests will not only enjoy the incredible design of the restaurant, but also a variety of traditional and modern steakhouse dishes. Burwell’s serves progressive, high-quality fare alongside time-honored classics. There truly is something for everyone on this menu,” adds co-owner Kenneth Emery.
Under the direction of Charleston native, executive chef Eric Huff, Burwell’s embraces a “modern steakhouse” philosophy with a menu of diverse, yet refined, steak dishes cooked over a 1,400 degree wood fire or 700 degree stone. The menu comprises a variety of fresh, local seafood options and other local fare. Signature steak dishes include rock candy, a stone-seared ribeye top cap with port wine gorgonzola, and trio of petite filet with grilled and melted Brussels sprouts and assorted sauces. Seafood selections include pork belly and scallops with roasted cauliflower and parsnip puree, apple fennel compote and tap 357 reduction, wild-caught grilled salmon with apple and faro salad and melted leek sauté, and shrimp and “grits” with quinoa, prosciutto picata sauce and saffron oil. Pastry chef Mark Heyward-Washington will also delight diners with an innovative dessert menu inspired by Southern staples and local ingredients.
The restaurant’s beverage program is a thoughtfully curated collection of craft cocktails, traditional drinks with a modern flare and an extensive wine list. The bar menu also features a diverse selection of small “bar bites” perfect for happy hour or those interested in a quick, casual meal.
The restaurant design integrates modern accents and traditional Charleston décor, with both masculine and feminine design details emphasizing an inclusive atmosphere. The most striking detail is the two-story window that exposes an exquisite, custom-designed chain chandelier suspended among preserved cypress walls dating back to the late 1800s. Separate spaces for dining, drinking and lounging are defined, an airy, “see-and-be- seen” aesthetic promotes a social environment within the two-story structure. Vibrant materials and colorful patterns in shades of brick red, jute, cocoa brown and ivory tones add polished nuances to the historic building’s backdrop.
Burwell’s 5,600 square-foot building boasts space for both private and semi-private dining. With the capabilities to host large and small groups, the restaurant is an ideal location for entertaining and events. Additional dining spaces include a VIP wine room on the first floor adjacent to the bar, an intimate two-person mezzanine table and two outdoor spaces. The unique and spacious venue allows for a multitude of customizable guest experiences. Guests have the option to enjoy an interactive dining encounter in full view of the restaurant’s exhibition kitchen or can reserve private dining options, all the while reveling in the lively lounge and bar scene at Burwell’s.
The restaurant’s name is derived from owner John Thomas’ family farm, which dates back generations and is where he developed an exceptional passion for hospitality.
