Designed in the 1820s by the famous Robert Mills, nine iconic powder magazines were constructed on the neck of Charleston. But they were forgotten by the 1930s and largely gone by the '50s.

But traces do still exist, and The Post and Courier's Robert Behre made a trip out to the area. He shares a nice story and solid photo gallery of the buildings as they looked in the 1930s and today.

This article at the Preservation Society of Charleston also has some more interesting background and imagery.
