The 2010 Spoleto poster: Regarding the flap over the map (update: more flap)

Update May 19: And yet more flap, this time Nick Smith from the Charleston City Paper has jumped in the game and deserves a good amount of credit for talking about the ambivalence that surrounded Maya Lin's other work: The Vietnam Memorial. Take a read here. Oh, and he mentions Noriko Ambe's work during the 2006 Force of Nature show -- see it here.

Update May 10: Columnist Andy Brack has jumped in the Spoleto game, rounding up commentary and offering a few comments of his own; take a read of it here. Also worth a read are the scathing comments by noted local graphic artist Gil Shuler.

First reporting: It goes "From Rhode Island to South Carolina." And clearly to South Carolina the debate about the 2010 Spoleto poster has gone.

A lot of folks "don't get it," and the explanations by the Spoleto Festival USA as to why the poster is worthy haven't sold many on just how great it is.

But if you feel like you could use a bit more convincing, The Post and Courier has taken a stab at explaining the poster ... but I'll give you a tip: If you don't get this poster, I doubt their piece will change your mind much. Rather take it as a sign that this is the most controversial Spoleto poster in some time.

There always seems to be debate about the annual selection, but I can't recall it having ever been so one-sided before.

At any rate, here's a link to The Post and Courier's story.
