Actually "new" might be the wrong word, as South Carolina has been without a bishop from the Catholic church since October 2007.

At any rate, Robert E. Guglielmone has been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI and will lead the Palmetto State's 183,000 Roman Catholics and 118 parishes and missions. The 63-year-old has been a rector at the St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, New York.

Guglielmone is to be ordained and installed as Bishop of Charleston at the
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston at 7 p.m. March 25.
