Join Possibilities without Borders – a local non-profit organization supporting international causes – and students at the College of Charleston School of Business in taking on the world’s water crisis, which claims the lives of more people each day than war, natural disasters, AIDS or even hunger.
The fourth annual "A Global Affair" Gala and Silent Auction will celebrate Water Mission International’s (WMI) tenth anniversary and raise vital funds for the Water for Kenya project, which will help bring clean drinking water to a village in Kenya. The black-tie-optional event will be held on Thursday, November 10th on the stunning banks of the Ashley River at Lowndes Grove in Charleston. Sponsors include Duvall, ICEBOX Bar Services, Snyder Event Rentals, Cooper River Bridge Run, The Printing Group, Patrick Properties, What2WearWhere.com and Caroline's Market & Catering.
What is unique about the event this year is that it is largely being planned and executed by students at the College of Charleston. Undergraduates enrolled in Dr. Andrea Canberg’s Event Management course have been devoting their time and talents to planning this event from concept to delivery. This unique opportunity provides real-life exposure to event planning, fundraising, project management and philanthropy to students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management track.
“The ability to engage the students in experiential learning while at the same time promoting global citizenship and supporting Water Missions International is incredibly gratifying,” said Dr. Canberg. “The experiential learning involved with this project will continue into the spring semester when a group of students in this spring's International Service Learning Study Abroad course will be travelling with WMI to deliver the system to Kenya. This event and project could be life-changing experiences for some of these students.”
Funds raised at A Global Affair will allow Possibilities Without Borders will provide a community in Kenya with a Living Water™ Treatment System, as well as support a group of students from the College of Charleston traveling to Kenya for this project next spring. While in Kenya, the students will install the safe water system, establishing access to clean drinking water, and will work with community leaders on how to maximize this technology.
“Possibilities Without Borders connects the greater Charleston community with globally relevant causes,” said Dr. David Desplaces, chairman of PWB and assistant professor of global commerce at the College of Charleston’s School of Business. “The Water for Kenya project will provide an area in need with a life-saving resource – clean drinking water – and offer our students the opportunity to be directly involved.”
Possibilities Without Borders was established two years ago in order to provide additional means for C of C students to become involved in international service learning and to connect with members of the Charleston community.
Opportunities to support this cause are still available by becoming a sponsor or donating to the silent auction. Tickets are $75 in advance and $85 at the door. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold, so purchasing tickets in advance is strongly encouraged.
