Every month the Charleston County Public Library offers a ton of free events, here's the rundown for September.

SPECIAL EVENTS

National Library Card Sign Up Month: Show Me the Card! (ages 11 and under)
September 1 – 30
All library branches
Kids – make sure you have the most important school supply of all – a library card! Library cards are available free to every child who is a resident of Charleston County. Each day you show your library card to the Children’s Librarian at any Charleston County Public Library branch during the month of September, you will be entered into a drawing to win a $10.00 bookstore gift certificate.

National Library Card Sign Up Month: Book Sale Bucks! (adults)
September 1 – 30
All library branches
Don’t have a library card? September is the time to get one! Register for a library card in September and you’ll receive a Book Sale Bucks coupon for $2.00 to be used at BookFest 2008 in October. Library cards are free for Charleston County residents.

Food for Fines
September 15 – October 5
All library branches
Pay off your fines with food for the Lowcountry Food Bank! CCPL will forgive $1 in overdue fines for each new, non-perishable food item donated, up to a maximum of $20. Present them in person – no food in the book drop, please! Replacement fees for lost or damaged materials are excluded from this program.

MOJA for Kids at the Library: Puppet Show! (all ages)

Film Movement: The Grocer’s Son
Tuesday, September 2 at 7 p.m.

It is summer, and thirty-year-old Antoine is forced to leave the city to return to his family in Provence. His father is sick, so he must assume the lifestyle he thought he had shed—driving the family grocery cart from hamlet to hamlet, delivering supplies to the few remaining inhabitants. Accompanied by Claire, a friend from Paris whom he has a secret crush on, Antoine gradually warms up to his experience in the country and his encounters with the villagers, who initially seem stubborn and gruff, but ultimately prove to be funny and endearing. This film is in French with English subtitles.

Independent Lens Community Cinema: Chicago 10

Mixing animation with archival footage, director Brett Morgen explores the build-up to and unraveling of the 1968 Chicago Conspiracy Trial. Chicago 10 is a parable of hope, courage and challenge as it portrays the struggle of young Americans speaking out and taking a stand in the face of an oppressive and armed government.

Met Opera at the Library: Opening Night Gala
Saturday, September 27 at 12:30 p.m.

The Met’s 125th anniversary season opens with a celebratory gala starring Renee Fleming in three of her most acclaimed roles: the second act of Verdi’s La Traviata, the third act of Massenet’s Manon, and the final scene from Richard Strauss’s Capriccio. Tenor Ramón Vargas and baritones Thomas Hampson and Dwayne Croft join the soprano for this season-opener with James Levine as Music Director and Marco Armiliato conducting.

Saul Alexander Gallery Art Exhibit

Artist Missie Stevenson will share her work titled In Our Hands in the Saul Alexander Gallery in September. Stevenson’s exhibit draws attention to the plight of endangered animals, such as sea turtles and manatees, to remind us that their fate is “in our hands.”

The Saul Alexander Foundation Gallery in the Charleston County Public Library announces a call for entries for juried art exhibitions, solo or group, beginning December 2008 through December 2009 at the Main Library, 68 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Preference is given to work reflecting experiences and viewpoints of South Carolina residents. Deadline for completed applications is Sept 5, 2008. Teapot Display

Vernice Yates, a 20-year collector of teapots, will display various unique styles and shapes of old and new, rare and common, English, Asian, and German teapots. China teapots, silver teapots, pottery teapots, fine porcelain teapots, contemporary teapots – this collection is an astounding selection of sculptural artwork.

Bonsai: The Art of Growing Miniature Trees or Plants
